Following the murder of the great Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, the NUJ held a protest at the Russian Embassy. General Secretary Jeremy Dear, who led the protest, has asked the Ambassador, Yuri Fedotov, for a meeting.

Anna Politkovskaya, shot dead by a hitman at her Moscow home, was the 13th journalist to die in a contract-style killing since Vladimir Putin came to power. Her assassination follows a crackdown on media freedom and the muzzling and intimidation of journalists in Russia

Jeremy Dear made three demands on the Russian government:

1. a thorough independent investigation into Anna Politkovskaya’s death and those of other slain colleagues, and the prosecution of people alleged to be responsible;
2. open and unhindered access by all journalists, Russian and international, to report the Chechen conflict;
3. an end to the harassment and killing of journalists.

The continuing harassment and murder of our colleagues in Russia is an outrage the NUJ does not want to let pass without protest.
